Another reason to vote for Fred Thompson

Posted by brvanlanen on December 31, 2007

CBS News had an interesting article on what could happen in the Republican Presidential primary if it comes down to Huckabee and Guiliani.

A Huck-Rudy showdown would be a primary fight between two candidates with almost nothing in common. It would polarize and tear apart the Republican party just as the national electorate is currently polarized.Such a disaster is a very distinct possibility. If Huckabee takes out Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire, or else heads off a resurgent McCain in South Carolina (or even Michigan), everything could come down to the close race developing between Huckabee and Giuliani in Florida. By the time Feb. 5 is over, Huckabee and Giuliani could be the clear frontrunners with their delegate counts, and more than half the convention delegates will have already been awarded. For the late contests, Republicans of one stripe would decide that Rudy is the only man who can stop Huckabee. And Republicans of a different stripe would fall in behind Huckabee as the only man who can stop Rudy. This bitter fight would also leave many Republican voters with a paralyzing choice between two poor general election candidates. From there, it becomes a Republican blood feud unless a third candidate can force a brokered convention.

If such a scenario doesn’t scare the dickens out of a conservative Republican I’m not sure what will.  All I know is that it even the slightest possibility of such a scenario is encouragement enough to suggest you check out Fred Thompson and make a contribution.  Unlike these two guys Fred Thompson would help make the GOP stronger & help it re-focus.PS – Here’s the lowdown on Giuliani and Huckabee.  As well as information on why Fred is the only choice.

Packers Divisional Round playoff game.

Posted by brvanlanen on December 31, 2007

The Packers playoff game will be the 1st of the games played the weekend of January 12-13.  That means a 3:30 pm start at the Frozen Tundra.  So Seattle, Tampa or the Giants will be making the trek to Lambeau.  The early forecast looks decent.  Personally I’d like to see a home-field advantage of about 10 degrees and snow though you really don’t get a weather advantage if it ends up being the Giants.

Strong finish at 13-3

Posted by brvanlanen on December 30, 2007

Way to go Pack!  In a game that had nothing at stake the Packers prevailed over the hapless Lions 34-13.  Now it’s time to sit back and enjoy a week off.  However this could be a concern.

On a day when the goal was to stay healthy, the Green Bay Packers couldn’t avoid the injury bug.

Of greatest concern after Sunday’s 34-13 win over the Detroit Lions in the regular-season finale at Lambeau Field was the condition of the offensive line.Guards Jason Spitz and Junius Coston dropped out with potentially serious leg injuries, leaving their status in doubt for the Jan. 12 NFC divisional playoff game at Lambeau Field. Also injured were running back Ryan Grant (shoulder stinger) and cornerback/punt returner Will Blackmon (foot).

Of the injuries, Coston’s appeared to be the most serious. He pulled his right calf muscle in the third quarter and not only couldn’t finish the game, but had troubling walking across the field from the Packers’ bench to the tunnel after the game.

“Fortunately for us, we’ve got time,” Packers center Scott Wells said. “I don’t know how bad (the injuries) are, and hopefully, they’re just being (cautious) with those guys. Hopefully, it’s nothing, but we do have time for them to heal up and get back on the field.”

Time – thanks to that wonderful thing known as a 1st round bye.  Things like these show the importance of gaining one of the top two seeds.

Huckabee cornered on illegal immigration again

Posted by brvanlanen on December 30, 2007

Mike Huckabee continues to be dogged by illegal immigration and his seemingly continuous change in his position.  Today he got cornered by Tim Russert on Meet the Press.

Why is it that you can never get a straight answer from guys from Hope, Arkansas?

Thompson best choice for GOP

Posted by brvanlanen on December 30, 2007

Excellent article in today’s Tennessean on why Fred Dalton Thompson is the best choice for the GOP.  Note that the first candidate of choice for Justin had been Mike Huckabee.

Like Huckabee, I am an evangelical, a Southern Baptist, staunchly pro-life and pro-second amendment. Huckabee’s charm, his effectiveness in arguing conservative viewpoints won me over. Not long after my conversion, the Huckaboom erupted in Iowa, South Carolina, Florida and spread to the most of the country. I donated $50 to his candidacy in early November, because I believed he could win the GOP nomination.

So why the change?

I was completely shocked when I read an Arkansas Leader article stating Huckabee issued more than 700 commutations and pardons during his tenure, more than Arkansas’ six neighboring states combined. I was even more repulsed when I learned the list of pardons and commutations included convicted murderers and rapists.

As a fiscal conservative, I was annoyed with Huckabee’s protectionist-sounding rhetoric and particularly his name-calling, labeling the conservative group Club for Growth, the “Club for Greed.” His immigration policies as governor also gave me cause for concern, but I pushed all of Huckabee’s faults to the back of my mind, instead choosing to dwell on his pro-life record and position on the war. However, when I studied the Wayne Dumond story and Huckabee’s “desire” to see the convicted rapist released into society, alarm bells went off. After reading the Arkansas Leader article on Huckabee’s shocking propensity to side with convicted murderers and rapists over victims, I meekly pulled off my Huckabee bumper stickers.

The research begins with a “no” for Guiliani (lack of integrity (multiple adulteries) and for his abortion, gun control and immigration policies), “no” for McCain (alienated social conservatives by championing campaign finance “reform,” and he kicked conservatives down the road on judges with his gang of 14 “grand compromise”) and finally a “no” for Romney (history of running on one platform and embracing another once he entered office. Mitt’s positions also seem more political than principled)

That of course leaves Fred Dalton Thompson:

Thompson has been strong on the war, judges, life and the second amendment. He came into the race late, and he did not hit the ground running. But his last debate performance demonstrates that he is hitting his stride. When he made the “no hand shows” remark at the Iowa debate, I saw real leadership and the other candidates following him. He supported McCain-Feingold, but has since admitted this was a mistake.

I like that about Fred — he acknowledges his mistakes.

Fred Dalton Thompson doesn’t act Presidential on the campaign trail, he IS Presidential.  The MSM may not like Fred because he doesn’t fit their style, preferring to do things his way when it comes to running for President.  However starting with Iowa they will be unable to ignore him any longer.

If you haven’t already done so I encourage you to learn more about Fred.  If you can do so I also encourage you to contribute to Fred’s campaign by clicking the donate button in the sidebar.

As the article says – Fred will win because he is the most reliable, consistent, principled conservative in this race. Unleash the Fredmentum.

Romney administration gave loan approval for abortion clinic

Posted by brvanlanen on December 29, 2007

So the “this is what I say, this is what my record shows” monster has appeared for former Governor Mitt Romney.  Known for flip-flopping on the pro-life issue Mitt’s administration gave preliminary loan approval for a Planned Parenthood clinic.

Former governor Mitt Romney’s economic development agency granted initial approval to a tax-exempt bond last year for a Planned Parenthood clinic in Worcester that will provide abortions, just two months before he left office and began highlighting his antiabortion position as a presidential candidate.

The campaign of course claims Mitt wasn’t aware of this or he would have blocked it but …

Jeffrey M. Berry, a political science professor at Tufts University, said he was surprised that Romney and his aides did not catch such a politically sensitive financial deal making its way through his economic development agency. Now, Berry said, the campaign will be put in the position of defending Romney at a time when he is heading into the most critical days of his candidacy.

“It is unusual that his people at the agency did not find a reason not to fund Planned Parenthood,” Berry said. “His administration was clearly focused on his run for the presidency and making sure there was no embarrassment like this. It was an administration that was pretty efficient getting everyone operating on the same page and avoiding scandal.”

The shift in where he stands on this issue isn’t surprising.  What may be surprising to some is that Planned Parenthood is pointing out the shift.

“This was more than just a flip-flop, this was an extreme makeover,” said Angus McQuilken, a spokesman for a Planned Parenthood advocacy arm. “We feel an obligation to let America know who the real Mitt Romney is – a candidate who will say anything to get elected.”
