Threat to American Sovereignty?

Posted by brvanlanen on August 9, 2008

Very very interesting. And also eye-opening.

A threat that must be stopped.

A threat John McCain will not stop.

A threat Barack Hussein Obama will not stop.

Phelps sets WR in 400 IM

Posted by brvanlanen on August 9, 2008

Amazing start on history quest in Beijing for Michael Phelps.

Michael Phelps won the first race on his Olympic calendar Sunday, the 400-meter individual medley, in spectacular fashion.

He set a world record in 4:03.84. Rival Ryan Lochte finished third.

Phelps now owns seven Olympic golds in his career. Two more would tie him for most career golds — the mark held by swimmer Mark Spitz, track star Carl Lewis and two others.

The 23-year-old Phelps had set an Olympic record in Saturday’s preliminaries, touching in 4:07.82, nearly a half-second better than the Games record — his own, set in 2004 in winning the 400 IM at the Athens Olympics.

Among those on hand Sunday morning at the Water Cube: President Bush. A few moments before the race began, he held up an American flag. Across the pool, the chant went up: “U-S-A, U-S-A.”

Great job, seven more to go to break Spitz’s single game record.  Three more for the most career golds.

Mr. Rodger’s neighborhood

That’s what it is in Green Bay now that Brett’s been traded to the J-E-T-S. And for all those doomsday folks upset with Favre being traded, if your true Packers fans it’s time to “move on”.

Seventeen years ago an unknown kid from Southern Miss took over for a popular QB at the time, one “Magik Man,” who could still play the game. Back then people thought the Packers were crazy even trading for the kid. But after being given a fair chance that kid turned out pretty darn good and did great things for the Packers.

Like it or not what happened with Brett was a “business” decision predicated on the fact that Brett had retired. What transpired in the last month is the result of missteps on both sides but let’s be honest here – the Packers success was the result of a TEAM EFFORT. If you take a step back and look at the overall picture this is a talented Packers team, per one Brett Favre.

I said last year and the year before that was probably the most talented team I’d ever played on. Everyone thought I was crazy. I still think the same. I think they have as good a chance as anyone in this league of getting back to not only where they were but getting to the Super Bowl.

That team is going to be good, with or without me

And now it’s Aaron Rodgers team.

“He’s ready to play,” McCarthy said of Rodgers. “There’s no, ‘He needs to do this a little better, he needs to do that a little better.’ He’s ready to go. He needs to go out and play games. He has entered the last step, and he has benefited from playing behind Brett for three years.”

No one knows what will happen with him at the helm. He could fall flat on his face or have a great career as the Packers starting QB. But he deserves a fair shot just like Brett got seventeen years ago. And he also doesn’t deserve this type of treatment.

But Rodgers finds less amusing the half-dozen or so times he’s been sworn at by Favre fans, including children, as he’s stopped to punch in his entry code to enter the players’ parking lot.

“When a little kid is yelling swear words at me, that kind of gets to me a little bit,” Rodgers said. “The boos? They expect a high level of play, and they miss Brett Favre, I understand that. But the f-you and the little kids saying swear words, I don’t understand that.”

Like him or not as the Packers starting QB he deserves some respect in what is now his neighborhood.

R.I.P. Bernie

Sadness in the comedy world.

Bernie Mac, the actor and comedian who teamed up in the casino heist caper “Ocean’s Eleven” and gained a prestigious Peabody Award for his sitcom “The Bernie Mac Show,” died Saturday at age 50.

“Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital,” his publicist, Danica Smith, said in a statement from Los Angeles.

She said no other details were available and asked that his family’s privacy be respected.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body’s organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

Recently, Mac’s brand of comedy caught him flack when he was heckled during a surprise appearance at a July fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate and fellow Chicagoan Barack Obama.

Toward the end of a 10-minute standup routine, Mac joked about menopause, sexual infidelity and promiscuity, and used occasional crude language. The performance earned him a rebuke from Obama’s campaign.

But despite controversy or difficulties, in his words, Mac was always a performer.

“Wherever I am, I have to play,” he said in 2002. “I have to put on a good show.”

Rest in peace Bernie.  Condolences to the family.
