A simple Tea Party …

is being held in Wisconsin Rapids on April 15.

Dissatisfaction with government spending and leadership will have local residents doing more than just speaking out come Tax Day.

A small group of Wisconsin Rapids-area residents will come together Wednesday on the banks of the Wisconsin River to protest what they consider wasteful spending by state and federal lawmakers.

“It’s mostly to let our legislators know and that what we need is fiscal responsibility coming from them,” said Diane Wickstrom, one of the event’s organizers. “The government is spending like crazy. … It’s taxation with poor representation.”

In the spirit of the original Boston Tea Party in 1773, during which American colonists dumped tea into Boston Harbor in protest of what they considered unfair taxes from the British government, participants will drop dry tea leaves into the Wisconsin River, Wickstrom said.

“We don’t have any grandstand, and we don’t have any speeches,” she said. “We have nothing formally planned; this is our first effort.”

Although the event has no official affiliation with similar events, Wickstrom said the concept is the same.

“That’s what inspired us,” she said. “It’s all about fiscal irresponsibility.”

Simple and to the point.
