Senator Harry Reid bullies newspaper

Perhaps this is why the two Gannett papers in the 8th district constantly act like lap dogs for Congressman Kagen and rarely have anything critical to say.

Has Steve Kagen or his liberal buddies bullied the local papers the way Senator Harry Reid bullied the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Sunday accused Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, of “bullying” his newspaper by telling an employee he wants the Review-Journal shut down.

Sherman Frederick alleged in a column in his newspaper that the “full-on threat” was made during a brief exchange between Reid and the newspaper’s advertising director Wednesday at a luncheon for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce.

Frederick said that as Reid shook the employee’s hand, he said, “I hope you go out of business.”

While acknowledging that his newspaper does not always see “eye to eye with him on matters of politics,” Frederick noted that ad director Bob Brown has “nothing to do with news coverage” or opinion pages.

The publisher is correct in calling out the Senator for his comment.

“No citizen should expect this kind of behavior from a U.S. senator. It is certainly not becoming of a man who is the majority leader in the U.S. Senate. And it absolutely is not what anyone would expect from a man who now asks Nevadans to send him back to the Senate for a fifth term,” he wrote. “So today, we serve notice on Sen. Reid that this creepy tactic will not be tolerated.” (Source – Publisher accuses Reid of “bullying” Nevada newspaper – FoxNews)

Representatives, not rulers elected

Great letter to the editor.

I attended Rep. Steve Kagen‘s listening session at the Brown County Central Library and have since heard concerned citizens described as Nazis, brownshirts, terrorists, unAmerican, evil-mongers and paid mobs.

We have been contacting senators and representatives for months regarding their rushed massive spending and government takeovers. Unemployment is skyrocketing, businesses are closing, and the federal deficit is projected to quadruple last year’s record.

If nationalization of health care passes, the Congressional Budget Office projects an additional deficit of almost $300 billion. This government has not exactly earned the confidence of the American people.

Our outrage is about government bureaucrats, appointed by the president and overseen by Congress, mandating our health care; it is about financially penalizing American taxpayers and businesses if we don’t take a “government-approved” plan; it is about covering “non-U.S. citizens.”

These are all in the bill and more. Yes, we are frightened — these officials are supposed to be our representatives, not our rulers.

Thomas Jefferson said, “When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”

George Washington said, “Government is not reason; it is not eloquence; it is force … it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master.”

It is pretty sad when elected officials act the way the Representative Steve Kagen and others have acted when it comes to responding to concerned citizens.  Look at the actions of the federal government since the liberal Democrats have been in control.  The crap that has been shoved down the throats of the American people is ridiculous.  These people are ELECTED Representatives and should be listening to constituents, respecting constituents.  Instead they continue to act as rulers who can do whatever they want.

Hopefully people of the 8th District remember what Steve Kagen and his liberal buddies have done to this great nation when November 2010 rolls around.

Phantoms lose season opener

It was pointed out recently that West DePere could make history this football season.

If the Phantoms can win at least a share of the Bay Conference championship this season, they will become the first team to ever win at least a share of four straight Bay titles.

The history of the Bay goes back to 1970, so you can see why the feat would be quite impressive.

West De Pere will have its work cut out to accomplish the task. Seymour and Denmark both should be tough, and that scrappy New London team always presents a challenge. (Source – West DePere football looking to make history – Scott Venci’s Preps blog)

Friday night was the Phantom’s season opener against Seymour and the outcome wasn’t good for the Phantoms and their fans.

Troy Rottier caught an Alex Court pass over two West De Pere defenders in overtime and outran them to the end zone to lift Seymour 27-20 over the Phantoms in a Bay Conference opener Friday night.

Kaleb Jefson rushed for 82 yards and caught three passes for another 29 for Seymour.

Beau Bellmore piled up 222 yards on 40 carries for the Phantoms. (Source – Late Friday football – Green Bay Press-Gazette)

The result means there will be no undefeated season for the Phantoms.  In the Bay Conference it’s tough for anyone to go undefeated, so the chance at history is still there.

Up next the Denmark Vikings at home Friday night at 7 pm.

Statement from Mercury Marine

Here’s the statement released by Mercury Marine this morning:

Mercury Marine on Sunday confirmed that the contract proposal formally rejected by union members Aug. 23 expired at midnight Friday, Aug. 29, without acceptance by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).

The IAM conducted a last-minute vote on the original proposal terms and conditions but did not complete the process to a definitive conclusion prior to the expiration of the proposal.

As a result, Mercury said it will continue to operate the Fond du Lac facility under the terms and conditions of the existing contract, which expires in 2012. Manufacturing workers in Fond du Lac are represented by the IAM, Local chapter 1947. As previously announced, the company will now begin the transition planning process to its Stillwater, Okla., facility.

“We want to personally thank the business and community leaders of Fond du Lac and Stillwater, our local and state government officials and all of the committed employees of Mercury Marine who have supported us and given us their full effort during this difficult process,” said Mark Schwabero, president of Mercury Marine. “This has been a very difficult and stressful time for all involved but, as we said at the beginning of this process, it is our responsibility to make the best business decisions for the company to have a sustainable future.

“We will work closely with our teams in Fond du Lac and Stillwater to develop and communicate a smooth transition plan which we hope to implement with minimal disruption to our business and the communities.”

In light of extreme economic conditions that necessitate the consolidation of its manufacturing capacity,

Mercury had submitted a contract proposal to the union leadership that would have enabled the Fond du Lac facility to more effectively compete in a different, much smaller market.

Mercury said it expects to finalize the details of state and local programs over the next few days and that detailed plans for the transition will be announced as they become available. The company expects the full consolidation to take between 24 and 36 months.

“As we begin the planning process, we value the ongoing support of our community, employees and local officials,” Mr. Schwabero said. “We will continue to communicate regularly and openly as transition decisions are made over the coming months.” (Source – Statement from Mercury Marine – Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal)
