First Big Brush With Winter For Northeast Wisconsin

After a mild and near snowless November and December it appears all good things must come to an end.  From the National Weather Service:

A record setting March snowstorm

The Green Bay area and Northern Wisconsin were hammered by a late-season winter storm the last two days.  Seems Old Man Winter wasn’t willing to leave despite the onset of spring the other day.  The snowfall total was 15.3 inches with light snow still falling at 5 pm.  Fox 11 had some interesting facts about this storm:

-6th biggest snow storm on record
-3rd biggest March storm
-First time 3 storms have topped 10” in a winter: Aiden 11.0”, Dana 13.9”, Francesca 15.3”
- 7th snowiest winter on record
-7th snowiest March on record

The worst part was that it was a heavy, wet snow making it very difficult to clear.

It’s a blizzard!

The first major winter storm of the season for the area is going to be a whopper!

Guess the precipitation lull won’t be lasting.

…BLIZZARD WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST SUNDAY… THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GREEN BAY HAS UPGRADED THE WINTER STORM WARNING TO A BLIZZARD WARNING…WHICH IS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM CST SUNDAY. * SNOW MAY BE MIXED WITH SOME SLEET…RAIN OR LIGHT FREEZING RAIN EARLY BUT WILL BECOME ALL SNOW AND HEAVY AT TIMES. LATE TONIGHT INTO SUNDAY…VERY STRONG WINDS WILL DEVELOP TO PRODUCE BLIZZARD CONDITIONS WITH WIDESPREAD VISIBILITIES ONE QUARTER MILE OR LESS DUE TO SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW. * A TOTAL ACCUMULATION OF 8 TO 12 INCHES IS EXPECTED BY SUNDAY MORNING. More heavy rain forecast for Northeast Wisconsin …

and that means a Flash Flood Watch.

A flash flood watch is in effect for some of Northeastern Wisconsin from 1 to 10 p.m. today, with the potential of 1 to 3 inches of rain.

“It almost sounds like a snow forecast, doesn’t it? But no, this is rain,” said Dan Clark, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Ashwaubenon.

Counties affected include: Brown, Manitowoc, Kewaunee, Winnebago, Calumet and Outagamie.

Showers and thunderstorms will develop this morning, producing heavy rainfall by this afternoon, Clark said. (Source: Green Bay Press Gazette)
