89-year-old Marvin Hume loves his country and the Man and Woman who fight for it. Every evening, between Memorial Day and mid-October, for the last 38 years Mr. Hume, a Navy vet himself, has held a ceremony in New Jersey where he raises a flag that has been draped over a the casket of a veteran.

Gov. Christie explains how to cut spending

Every Republican elected to office last Tuesday needs to watch this video.

As Florida Pundit points out:

The challenge about spending cuts is usually followed by trying to get the Republican interviewed to agree that tax increases are necessary. Republicans have been pretty good so far explaining that we have a spending problem, not a tax revenue problem. Federal spending has sky-rocketed from its recent average of 18 percent of GDP to 25 percent and higher. It is spending that is out of control. We already paying more taxes than we should have to.

It’s a message that Republicans in Washington and in Madison need to continue driving home.

The Christie Reform Agenda

Kudos to NJ Governor Chris Christie for proposing this.

The Christie Reform Agenda: Cutting Costs and Directing Dollars to the Classroom

The Christie Reform Agenda includes a comprehensive tool kit to provide municipalities and school districts the necessary reform measures that will allow them to keep costs low and fund priority services. The Governor’s latest reform proposal caps education administrator pay and puts an end to abuses in the system.

This action has the potential to save almost $9.8 million and help ensure that the maximum amount of education funding stays in the classroom. On average, superintendents’ salaries have risen over twice the rate of inflation – a nearly 46 percent increase since 2001. This is a higher increase than teacher compensation or overall education spending. The ultimate cost to New Jersey taxpayers is over $100 million.

The Christie proposal will cut out-of-classroom costs by capping school administrators’ salaries and reforming how they are paid. (Source: NJ Office of the Governor)

Wouldn’t it be nice to see something like this enacted in Wisconsin?  Especially if everything the public schools do is “for the children”.

Cpl. Carlos E. Gil Orozco

Cpl. Carlos E. Gil Orozco
23 years old from San Jose, California
2nd Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force
September 10, 2007
U.S.M.C

Carlos Gil Orozco wasn’t a great student, but one goal pushed him to hit the books: becoming a Marine.

“He was kind of a troublemaker, you know, he got bad grades and wouldn’t do his homework,” said his sister, Myriam Johanna Gil Orozco. “But he wanted to be a Marine. So he studied real hard, especially algebra. He’d stay up all night studying.

Cpl. Orozco’s parents moved the family from Colombia to the U.S. when he was 8 years old, hoping to give their children a better education. They became frustrated when their son didn’t do well in school and thought the Marines would be good for him.

“My dad was actually happy,” Myriam said. “He’d rather have him be a Marine than out on the streets being in gangs or doing drugs.”

Cpl. Carlos Orozco was killed while conducting combat operations in Ashraf, Iraq when the tank he was riding in encountered an IED. Also killed in the blast was Lance Cpl. Jon T. Hicks Jr. of Atco, New Jersey.

Cpl. Orozco leaves behind his sister, his parents, his wife and two sons.
