He may not be up for election in 2012, but Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt wants changes in Wisconsin when it comes to false political ads.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt wants the state to provide new legal recourse for victims of false political advertising.

Entering a new political season, Schmitt said Friday that unfounded personal attacks can inhibit good people from seeking public office.

“Dirty campaigns should not be tolerated, and respect should be reinstated in the political campaign process,” he said in a prepared statement.

Schmitt called on state lawmakers to pass legislation that would allow political attack victims to “challenge the validity” of accusations and to seek a court order to stop false allegations.

Do you agree or disagree with Mayor Schmitt’s proposal? Does something need to be in place to rid the airwaves of false political ads?
